Financial Aid for Children with Special Needs
Program Unit Funding (PUF) is provided to school authorities to ECS children with severe disabilities/delays who require additional support beyond that offered in a regular ECS program. Funding is provided for individualized programming that meets the educational needs of children with severe disabilities/delays who are at least 2 years 6 months of age on September 1. PUF may be paid for a maximum of 3 years for each eligible child.
The Canada Child Tax Benefit is a tax-free monthly benefit made to eligible families to help them with the cost of raising children under the age of 18. The CCTB might include the National Child Benefit Supplement and the Child Disability Benefit.

The Child Disability Benefit (CDB) is a tax free benefit for families who care for a child under the age of 18 with a severe and prolonged impairment in mental or physical functions.
The UCCB is designed to help Canadian families, as they try to balance work and family life, by supporting their child care choices through direct financial support. The UCCB is for children under the age of 6 years and is paid in installments of $100 per month per child.
The disability amount is a non-refundable tax credit that a person with a qualifying disability can claim to reduce the amount of income tax he or she has to pay in a year. This amount includes a supplement for people under 18 at the end of the year.
The program provides information about various government programs and community services as well as referrals to advocacy groups, disability associations and other disability-related resources. It also helps families coordinate supports and services and assists with some of the extraordinary costs of raising a child with a disability.
The purpose of this brochure is to provide basic information about the kinds of services funded by the government of Alberta to support the development of young children who have special needs. Based on assessed needs, services range from specific, short term help to comprehensive ongoing support. These services are funded primarily through four distinct but linked provincial ministries: Education, Health and Wellness, Children’s Services, and Seniors and Community Supports.
